Background of the Study
The nutritional needs of elderly individuals are critical to maintaining their health, especially in institutional settings like nursing homes. Malnutrition in older adults is a prevalent issue that can lead to various health complications, including weakened immune function, poor wound healing, muscle weakness, and cognitive decline (Aliyu et al., 2023). In nursing homes, where elderly individuals often spend significant amounts of time, ensuring adequate nutrition is crucial for maintaining overall health and quality of life. In Katsina State, as in other parts of Nigeria, nursing homes serve as long-term care options for many elderly patients, but the ability to meet their specific nutritional requirements can be hindered by factors such as limited resources, inadequate training, and cultural dietary preferences (Ibrahim & Haruna, 2024).
Elderly individuals have unique nutritional needs due to age-related changes in metabolism, digestion, and absorption. These needs often include higher protein intake to maintain muscle mass, adequate fiber for digestive health, and sufficient vitamins and minerals to support bone health and immune function (Nwachukwu et al., 2023). However, studies indicate that nursing homes may face challenges in addressing these needs, leading to malnutrition or undernutrition among residents (Sani et al., 2024). This study aims to evaluate the nutritional needs of elderly patients in nursing homes in Katsina State, examining whether current dietary practices meet these needs and exploring potential gaps in care.
Statement of the Problem
Nutritional deficiencies among elderly patients in nursing homes in Katsina State can lead to poor health outcomes, including frailty, decreased immunity, and impaired recovery from illness. Despite the recognition of these risks, there is limited research on how well nursing homes in Katsina State address the specific nutritional needs of their elderly residents. This study seeks to evaluate the nutritional care provided to elderly patients in nursing homes and identify potential improvements.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the nutritional needs of elderly patients in nursing homes in Katsina State.
To assess the adequacy of nutritional care provided to elderly residents in nursing homes.
To identify the challenges faced by nursing homes in meeting the nutritional needs of elderly individuals.
Research Questions
What are the nutritional needs of elderly patients in nursing homes in Katsina State?
How adequate is the nutritional care provided to elderly residents in nursing homes in Katsina State?
What challenges do nursing homes face in meeting the nutritional needs of elderly individuals?
Research Hypotheses
Nutritional care in nursing homes in Katsina State is not adequate to meet the specific needs of elderly residents.
Elderly residents with adequate nutritional care have better health outcomes compared to those with insufficient nutrition.
Factors such as limited resources, staff training, and cultural preferences hinder the provision of adequate nutrition in nursing homes in Katsina State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing homes in Katsina State that provide long-term care for elderly patients. Limitations may include difficulty in assessing the full range of nutritional needs and challenges associated with collecting accurate data from nursing homes with limited documentation.
